We were feeling a little worse for the wear on Saturday after a big night out. We woke up ravenous and aching for some good Southern food. Luckily, we know a place.
Homegrown is comfort through and through—it’s set up in an cozy converted house, and the minute you walk in you feel like you’re visiting friends or relatives. The walls are dotted with local artwork, and there’s a bright, cheery vibe.
It’s a local farm-to-table spot specializing in food with integrity (yes, please!). Their menu is constantly changing to accommodate the seasons, so you never know what will be available that day. There’s a funky chalkboard detailing the offerings:
You order at the cash register, and they give you a number and rush your food right out. They definitely stay true to their motto, “Slow Food Right Quick“. Be sure to grab yourself some silverware, condiments, and a glass of water while you’re at the counter!

All the staff members at Homegrown are really friendly. We especially liked our server Danny–hi Danny!–who was so nice and asked about our constant photo-snapping.
You can sit indoors if you like, but there’s also a lovely patio which we decided to take advantage of. It’s nice and shady, so never really gets too hot.
Behold, the photographic evidence of our fragile state. We were still feeling a bit like the walking wounded, but that was all about to change…
Bam! Lunch was served. Fried NC Catfish with remoulade, broccoli and tomatoes for Mattie, and Sunburst Trout with saffron aioli, pommes frites, kale and tomato-basil soup for Chelsea.

The seafood here is the real deal—it tastes like it was still swimming the night before. The catfish is fried perfectly and isn’t greasy or heavy at all…just what the doctor ordered.
The trout is Chelsea’s go-to, and for good reason. It’s delicately spiced and the aioli is a perfect complement for the fish. We especially loved the pommes frites, aka “Fancy Fries”–little shoestrings that taste heavenly. The soup and kale were both delicious. What’s so great about the sides at Homegrown is that they showcase the simplicity of good, clean, local food. Who needs a ton of extra ingredients when it’s so wonderful on its own?

The veggie sides are simple but so perfect–the broccoli is blanched, so it has a nice crunch to it. The tomatoes were a star–gorgeous NC heirlooms with just a sprinkling of salt and pepper. Is there anything better in the middle of summer?

We left full, happy and with a much larger spring in our step than when we came in. All thanks to you, Homegrown!

Fantastic work, ladies…the pictures on this site are top notch. We’re all a little worse for the wear sometimes! We love this place, will have to get back there soon. Keep em coming!
