We were all feeling a bit worse for the wear (once again) last Sunday morning.  Usually the first thing on my mind waking up after a night out is, “Where are we eating?” Just so happened that UJ, located in West Asheville, was what was decided upon.

Mattie decided she’d had enough fun for one weekend and wanted to sit this one out, so I met up with Jessica and some other buddies for an early lunch.

We opted to eat outside, which was beautiful, although it didn’t do much for our hangovers.  It’s a great patio with a lovely atmosphere.

A few of us (not me, I’m not so resilient) got Bloody Mary’s to start. Described as a “meal in itself”, this Mary came stacked with lime, olive, okra and a green pepper and was said to be delicious. And for those of you that aren’t familiar with Asheville’s various craft brews, UJ’s draught list is super user-friendly – name of beer & brewery, price, location, ABC %, and flavor description – all questions answered.

I got water.

As an appetizer, we ordered the Pimiento Cheese Plate. Mildly spicy Pimiento cheese served with hummus, ciabatta bread grilled to perfection and roasted red peppers. More than enough to share with 4+ people.

For “Solids,” UJ offers all types of burgers, from classic to vegetarian. They also do a pretty wide array of sandwiches, salads and tacos/quesadillas.

Our friend Avery got the Breakfast Burger – medium rare w/ Cheddar cheese, bacon, a fried egg, LTO and a pickle spear. All burgers and sandwiches are served with a choice of fries, tater tots or a small spinach salad. (Avery and Luke say that the tots are on point.)

Luke went for a Pimiento cheese burger – medium w/ Pimiento cheese, fresh jalapeños, LTO & a pickle spear.

I chose the Blackened Tilapia Tacos and they were quite good – flakey, mildly flavored fish, diced lettuce and tomato and a jalapeño aioli; also served with chips and salsa. Jessica, not feeling very hungry after a night out, got nachos – specialized by hers-truly. House chips, black beans, sour cream and a mildly spicy cheese sauce.  Our server jokingly called them the “Minimalist Nachos.”

 Like many Asheville restaurants, UJ has both indoor seating and a great patio area where children can play and dogs are welcome. Our server was awesome; super-friendly and good at his job. Another bonus point is that, because UJ is located in West Asheville, you don’t have to deal with the madness that is parking downtown in the summer.  It’s a lovely spot and a great choice for a meal.
